Aquatic Fitness Professional Practical & Skill Applications Course

A hands-on workshop format led by AEA Aquatic Training Specialists and designed to reinforce the Online Prep Course.
This course does NOT cover all AFP Manual Chapters or topic areas; rather it targets practical applications and instructor skills that are sometimes difficult to master through reading or distance learning.
Theory, classroom movement and pool participation help you to apply your knowledge to enhance your teaching! Advanced Course preparation is recommended. The AFP day-long course outline will be provided with your registration. This course outline will detail what is covered in the AFP Course.
Aquatic Circuits & Intervals – 7 Hours
CECs: AEA 7.0, ACE 0.6, AFAA 5.0, BOC 7.0
Learn how to vary your aquatic class format from steady-state aerobic training to circuits and intervals for continued progress and motivation of your participants. Circuit Training – small group stations as well as instructor guided options – allows you to combine muscular resistance with cardiovascular conditioning to provide an interesting and well-balanced workout in the pool with, or without, equipment. Interval Training, an aerobic format that incorporates alternating segments of work and rest, can be effectively applied to an aquatic setting to challenge the well conditioned, advanced level individual or modified for entry-level participants or special pops.
Creating Cardio & Strength Training Programs – 7 Hours
CECs: AEA 7.0, ACE 0.6, AFAA 5.0, BOC 7.0
This highly interactive program focuses on how to develop safe, effective and enjoyable fitness programming through aerobic and resistance training in shallow water (waist to chest depth). Creative sequencing, smooth transitions and movement variations will help leaders to develop a unique style of choreography / movement progression. Class formats, training schedules and programming options for drag, buoyant and rubberized equipment will allow leaders to reach a variety of ages and abilities. Group exercise and personal training formats alike benefit from hands on application of the physical properties of water and the use of music, leadership skills and safe deck instruction will be covered.
Deep Water Techniques – 7 Hours
CECs: AEA 7.0, ACE 0.6, AFAA 5.0, BOC 7.0
Explore ways to maximize pool use by incorporating a variety of deep water training techniques. Learn training formats, review the physiological responses and discuss equipment options suited for suspended vertical training in deep water. Practical application will focus on non-impact aerobic movements, core stabilization, and stretching techniques for all ability levels. In addition, isolated abdominal exercises in a variety of body positions and safe and effective deck instruction will be addressed. “Transitional” programming – water exercise performed in water depths between 4 and 6 feet – will be covered in lecture.
Aquatic Kick Boxing – 5 Hours

In-depth knowledge for safe and effective kick boxing in an aquatic environment is presented for both group fitness instructors and personal trainers. Focus is on the AEA/ISCA Standard & Guidelines for Kick Boxing as well as movement modifications for water adaptation. Learn the basics and then build various techniques into programs suited for all ages and levels of fitness. Explore the physical and mental benefits of three modalities for kick boxing in the pool – stand-alone training, combination programming to enhance current aquatic exercise formats, and multi-sport fitness workout options.
Aquatic Sport, Function & Performance – 5 Hours

Put the ‘fun’ back into function through creative and carefully developed aquatic exercise. Whether designing aquatic programs for the professional athlete, the “armchair” athlete, or somewhere in between, this interactive workshop will provide numerous options for improving performance. The focus is on formatting for optimum efficiency in relation to a variety of student goals: sports related, recreational activity, or daily function. Consider participant goals, muscle involvement & equipment interaction, and movement patterns to improve performance and enhance exercise retention at any level of activity or sport. Great for group exercise or personal training!
Older Adults & Aquatic Applications – 5 Hours

Older Adults comprise the fastest growing segment of the American population and aquatic exercise can help them maintain functional fitness and independent living skills. A thorough review of the physiological aspects of aging will introduce group exercise leaders and personal trainers to important considerations for working with the older adult population. Other topics include marketing, program benefits, exercise and class formats, intensity modifications, teaching hints, instructor skills, pool equipment and contraindications. The practical application will include three levels of senior aquatic programming to reach the needs of ALL older adults!
Aquatic Warm Ups & Cool Downs – 3 Hours

Innovative ideas, motivating moves and hands-on activities designed to warm up your classes and soothe your cool downs. Learn rhythmical stretching and relaxation techniques through theory and application that will improve your leadership skills and add a variety of options for your students. Flexibility, alignment, breathing and relaxation ideas for recommended water temperatures will be covered. The practical application will demonstrate suggested warm ups and cool downs for various populations and programming formats.
Class Construction: Successful Senior Strategies – 3 Hours

From marketing and promotion to music and motivation, every concept of program design, development and implementation must be considered. Class Construction: Core Training + Stretch Techniques – 3 Hours

Dive into a pool of core training techniques that include standing, traveling and buoyant options to develop dynamic strength for improved function. Learn options with, and without, equipment to meet a variety of goals and successfully target all skill levels. Heat up your shallow water programming with an assortment of upper body and core training applications. Learn how to apply fun, force and function to basic arm patterns building progressions for all goals and abilities.
